Expect Pain
‘Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters  whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.’  James 1:2,3

Misconceptions
  • Pain is punishment 
  • Reward for being good is things will go well 
  • God wants us all to be healthy, wealthy and problem free 
  • For Christians all trials get fixed 

Your Attitude toward trials will determine the outcome

No Fuel, No Finish
  • ‘Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint’

Becoming holy is about becoming more like Jesus.

And all the churches will know that I am he who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you according to your works. 24 But to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not learned what some call the deep things of Satan, to you I say, I do not lay on you any other burden. 25 Only hold fast what you have until I come. 26 The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations, 27 and he will rule[c] them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father. 28 And I will give him the morning star. 29 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

Yet you hold fast my name, and you did not deny my faith even in the days of Antipas my faithful witness, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. 14 But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality. 15 So also you have some who hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans. 16 Therefore repent. If not, I will come to you soon and war against them with the sword of my mouth. 17 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.’ 
Legalism adds price tags to God’s free grace.
Laxity removes price tags from sin. 
Matthew 10:34-39
34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 And a person's enemies will be those of his own household. 37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

Trials are temporary. Eternity is forever

 What does it mean to "abandon the love you had at first"? (v4) 
Mark 12:28-31

Revelation was written TO churches then, but also FOR us today.

3 Descriptions of the Church
1) We are God’s body
(Rom 12:4-5; 1 Cor 12:12-27; Eph 1:22-23, 4:15-16; Col 1:18)

12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit… 27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 

2) We are God’s building
(1 Peter 2:4-5; Heb 3:3-6)

4 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

A Love that Lasts, Not a Love that’s Lost 

1 Corinthians 13:13 
1 Corinthians 13:1-3
If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

God’s love isn’t just the end of our story – it’s the point of our story.

“Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked Him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”
“Yes, it is as you say,” Jesus replied.  When He was accused by the Chief priests and the elders, He gave no answer.
Then Pilate asked Him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?” But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge - to the great amazement of the governor.
While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with the innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of Him.

But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.
“Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor.
“Barabbas,” they answered.
“What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?”  Pilate asked.
They answered, “Crucify Him!”
“Why? What crime has He committed?” asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify Him!”
When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd.  “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said.  “It is your responsibility!”
All the people answered, “Let His blood be on us and on our children.”
Then he released Barabbas to them.  But he had Jesus flogged and handed Him over to be crucified. 

Luke 23:1-7; 11-25
Then the whole assembly rose and led Him off to Pilate.  And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation.  He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Christ, a king.”
So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
“Yes, it is as you say,” Jesus replied.
Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd,”I find no basis for a charge against this man.”
But they insisted, “He stirs up the people all over Judea by His teaching.  He started in Galilee and has come all the way here.”
On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean.  When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked Him.  Dressing Him in an elegant robe, they sent Him back to Pilate.  That day Herod and Pilate became friends - before this they had been enemies.
Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion.  I have examined Him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against Him.  Neither has Herod, for he sent Him back to us; as you can see He has done nothing to deserve death.  Therefore, I will punish Him and then release Him.”
With one voice they cried out, “Away with this man!  Release Barabbas to us!”  Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.
Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again.  But they kept shouting “Crucify Him!  Crucify Him!”
For the third time he spoke to them: “Why?  What crime has this man committed?  I have found in Him no grounds for the death penalty.  Therefore, I will have Him punished and then release Him.”
But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that He be crucified, and their shouts prevailed.  So, Pilate decided to grant their demand.  He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.

John 18:28-19:16
Then the Jews led Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor.  By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness the Jews did not enter the palace; they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.  So, Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”
“If He were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed Him over to you.”
Pilate said, “Take Him yourselves and judge Him by your own law.”
“But we have no right to execute anyone.” the Jews objected.  This happened so that the words Jesus had spoken indicating the kind of death He was going to die would be fulfilled.
Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked Him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” “Is this your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about Me?”
Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied.  “It was your people and your chief priests who handed You over to me.  What is it You have done?”
Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world.  If it were, My servants would fight to prevent My arrest by the Jews.  But now My kingdom is from another place.”
“You are a king, then!” said Pilate.
Jesus answered, “You are right in saying I am a king.  In fact, for this reason I was born,
and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth.  Everyone on the side of truth listens to Me.”
“What is truth?” Pilate asked.  With this he went out again to the Jews and said, “I find no basis for a charge against Him.  But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover.  Do you want me to release the king of the Jews?”
They shouted back, “No, not Him!  Give us Barabbas!”  Now Barabbas had taken part in a rebellion.
Then Pilate took Jesus and had Him flogged.  The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head.  They clothed Him in a purple robe and went up to Him again and again, saying “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they struck Him in the face.
Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews, “Look, I am bringing Him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against Him.”  When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”
As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw Him, they shouted, “Crucify!  Crucify!”
But Pilate answered, “You take Him and crucify Him.  As for me, I find no basis for a charge against Him.
The Jews insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law He must die, because He claimed to be the Son of God.”
When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid,
and he went back inside the palace.  “Where do you come from?”  he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.  “Do you refuse to speak to me?”  Pilate said.  “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”
Jesus answered, “You would have no power over Me if it were not given to you from above.  Therefore, the one who handed Me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”
From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jews kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar.  Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.”
When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha).  It was the day of preparation of Passover Week, about the sixth hour.
“Here is your king,” Pilate said to the Jews.
But they shouted, “Take Him away! Take Him away!  Crucify Him!”
“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.
“We have no king but Caesar,” the Chief priests answered.
Finally, Pilate handed Him over to them to be crucified.

20 When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope of our being saved was at last abandoned. 21 Since they had been without food for a long time, Paul stood up among them and said, “Men, you should have listened to me and not have set sail from Crete and incurred this injury and loss. 22 Yet now I urge you to take heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship. 23 For this very night there stood before me an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I worship, 24 and he said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before Caesar. And behold, God has granted you all those who sail with you.’ 25 So take heart, men, for I have faith in God that it will be exactly as I have been told.

Acts 27:41-44
41 But striking a reef, they ran the vessel aground. The bow stuck and remained immovable, and the stern was being broken up by the surf. 42 The soldiers' plan was to kill the prisoners, lest any should swim away and escape. 43 But the centurion, wishing to save Paul, kept them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and make for the land, 44 and the rest on planks or on pieces of the ship. And so it was that all were brought safely to land.
Even in the wreckage, God gives you a plank to hold onto—and a promise that He’s holding onto you.
Acts 28:1-6
After we were brought safely through, we then learned that the island was called Malta. 2 The native people showed us unusual kindness, for they kindled a fire and welcomed us all, because it had begun to rain and was cold. 3 When Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and put them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened on his hand. 4 When the native people saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, “No doubt this man is a murderer. Though he has escaped from the sea, Justice has not allowed him to live.” 5 He, however, shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm. 6 They were waiting for him to swell up or suddenly fall down dead. But when they had waited a long time and saw no misfortune come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.
Getting bit hurts but staying bitter is a choice.
Acts 28:7-10
7 Now in the neighborhood of that place were lands belonging to the chief man of the island, named Publius, who received us and entertained us hospitably for three days. 8 It happened that the father of Publius lay sick with fever and dysentery. And Paul visited him and prayed, and putting his hands on him, healed him. 9 And when this had taken place, the rest of the people on the island who had diseases also came and were cured. 10 They also honored us greatly, and when we were about to sail, they put on board whatever we needed.
Through Christ, you can bring hope and healing to our world that desperately needs it.
Acts 28:30-31
30 He lived there [Rome] two whole years at his own expense, and welcomed all who came to him, 31 proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance.

While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus.  There he found some disciples and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”  They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”  So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?”  “John’s baptism,” they replied.  Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance.  He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”

Acts 18:1-4
After this Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. 2 And he found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to leave Rome. And he went to see them, 3 and because he was of the same trade he stayed with them and worked, for they were tentmakers by trade. 4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and tried to persuade Jews and Greeks.

Acts 18:18-19
18 After this, Paul stayed many days longer and then took leave of the brothers and set sail for Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila. At Cenchreae he had cut his hair, for he was under a vow. 19 And they came to Ephesus, and he left them there, but he himself went into the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews.

Acts 18:24-28
24 Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, competent in the Scriptures. 25 He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. How did the church in Philippi start?
Acts 16:12-15
12 and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city some days. 13 And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to the riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer, and we sat down and spoke to the women who had come together. 14 One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God. Acts 16:25-34
25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, 26 and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. 19 For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Ephesians 2:7-10
7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Grace is a gift to receive, not an award to achieve.

Belief Error #2: Jesus - Something = Laxity (life is defined by breaking the rules)

Acts 14:27
27 And when they arrived and gathered the church together, they declared all that God had done with them, and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles.

And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
A disciple follows Jesus, fellowships with believers, and fishes for people.

Forgiveness - the canceling of debt.

Forgiveness is NOT…

What hurt you doesn't have to hold you.

You need spiritual tools for supernatural results.

The P.A.T.H. to Forgiveness
1) Process the Wrong – Acknowledge the hurt honestly without minimizing it or denying it.
2) Abandon Revenge – Let go of desire to get even and trust God for justice.
3) Talk to God – Praying for the offender and invite God into the process.
4) Help Rebuild – When safe and possible, take steps toward reconciliation.

The kingdom of God is the power of God working through the people of God.

The kingdom of God is about the rule and reign of Christ.

Eternity doesn't start the moment you die, but the moment you place your faith in Jesus.

Colossians 1:13-14
13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Romans 14:17
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

Problems are sometimes the wrapping paper for God's provision.
